Alpine salamander at Plitvice Lakes!
UPDATE: We are happy to report that our finding is actually the third! Our colleague Eva Fućak sent us her finding from May 2021. Eva, thank you!
We recently found an alpine salamander (Salamandra atra) in a pit at Plitvice Lakes National Park. We took it out and released it, far from the entrance. Of course it endured the photo shoot (biologists have weaknesses too).
That evening we learned that it was the second record for the Park and the first after 15 years!
